Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert of the Chalmers Center have written a new book on ministry to the poor entitled When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty without Hurting the Poor...and Yourself. It is intended for those engaged in ministry to the poor: churches, ministries, missionaries, and individuals both at home and around the world. The book addresses harmful assumptions Christians often have about poverty, and presents appropriate interventions to use when ministering to the poor, including advice about short-term missions programs. Many of the principles taught are from the Chalmers Center's highly regarded Foundations and Principles of Holistic Ministry distance learning course. A four-lesson self-study guide complements the book and can be downloaded at no additional cost. To learn more, visit www.whenhelpinghurts.org.

The Chalmers Center for Economic Development offers a series of live, one-hour webinars (web-based seminars) on ministry to the poor. The webinars expand on topics presented in the new book When Helping Hurts, and are led by the book’s co-authors, Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert of the Chalmers Center. You can connect to the webinar from your home or office via the Internet and/or phone. There will be an opportunity to submit questions for consideration during the webinar. There is no charge to participate in a webinar. However, you must register at http://chalmers.org/when-helping-hurts/webinar/schedule.php.
There are many ways to reach out to a community, usually only limited by our imagination and faith; and only to some degree by our resources. One person with faith and an idea can still be used by God to be a light and a witness to a community, and be used by God to draw people into a congregation. Resources do limit us, but they do not hinder us in trying something, or some things, at some times. If there is a will to reach out to the community within a congregation there will be some resources available, and maybe more than you hoped or knew. Click here to read more.
