Dwight graduated from David Lipscomb University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communications in 1984. He went from there to Vanderbilt Divinity School and completed a Master of Arts in Theology. Subsequently, he attended Trinity Divinity School to receive a Masters of Divinity and entered the ministry in 1989. He also has a Masters in Philosophy from the Berkeley GTU and a Doctorate of Ministry in Family Practice from Westminster Seminary. He was commissioned in the Navy in December of 1994 and attended the Basic School for Chaplains in Newport, RI.
Upon completion of Chaplain School training, Lieutenant Junior Grade Horn was assigned to MCAS, Iwakuni, Japan in March of 1995 where he served as the base Chaplain. In June of 1997, LT Horn was sent to CFAY in Yokosuka, Japan to serve as the Command Chaplain for USS BUNKER HILL. He departed in June of 2000 and reported to DINFOS, Fort Meade, Maryland.
In March of 2003, LCDR Horn was selected for Post Graduate Studies at Berkeley GTU and upon completion of this degree, he went to Camp Pendleton and was assigned to 3/5 Battalion in July of 2004. In September 2007, he went to CREDO MCI West Camp Pendleton. After picking up CDR, Chaplain Horn was assigned to USS MAKIN ISLAND in March 2010 where he served as the Command Chaplain. From there, in 2012 he assumed duties as the Command Chaplain for Naval Station San Diego, CA, and was subsequently promoted to Captain.
Captain Horn received orders to become the 3d Marine Division Chaplain in 2014 and then, in September 2016, he was again milestone selected and sent to I MEF in 2016. After completion of that tour, he was billeted to HQMC REL as Deputy Chaplain to the Marine Corps. From there, he received orders to be the Faith Based Project Officer for the VA PREVENTS Task Force. When that assignment ended, he got orders to Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in 2022 where he ministered until retirement.
Chaplain Horn has been awarded the following: Legion of Merit (3), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (1), Meritorious Service Medal (3), Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Navy E Ribbon (2), Navy Fleet Marine Force Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy/Marine Corps Overseas, Fleet Marine Forces Qualification Pin.
Chaplain Horn has published various articles on Mental Health and published a book on war, reflecting upon his time in 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, called Emasculating Warriors: A Nation at War with its Warriors (https://www.amazon.com/Emasculating-Warriors-Nation-War-its/dp/179298443X).
Chaplain Horn retired from the US Navy in March of 2023 and began serving as an Associate Endorser for MNA Chaplain Ministries and the PRCC on April 1, 2023. He is developing the ministry known as PRCC MVM – Military and Veteran Ministry and has written several booklets to be used as resources for the church for the benefit of their military and retiree members and families.
Dwight and his wife Cyndee have been married nearly 30 years and have four grown children.
